Dear Friends:
When we think of 'mission" in the church, I feel we only have to remember one thing: The mission of the church is the mission of Jesus Christ. We must never think that it is up to us to create the mission of the church, not at all, it is up to us to discern what Christ's mission is for the church, and fulfill it.
Christ has prepared us well to fulfill His mission. First, in our Baptismal vows we are filled with God's life giving Holy Spirit, that is our foundation. Second, we accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, and put our whole trust in his grace and love as we obey him. For it is only through the grace of Jesus Christ that we will be able to accomplish anything. Yet, as we rely on Christ, amazing things happen. He enables us, as his body here on earth, to do His work. He enables us to proclaim by word and example His Good News. He enables us, as we serve Him, to love others as we love ourselves. He enables us to strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being. This is the framework with which we are sent into the world to fulfill the mission of the church.
In this last year, and in this coming year, we have tried and will try to fulfill the Five Marks of Mission which reflect Christ's mission. They are:
To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom of God
To teach, baptise and nurture new believers
To respond to human need by loving service
To seek to transform the unjust structures of society
To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth
In order to do this our Church Council had and
will have five sub-committees with goals to fulfill in each of these areas. I
thank God for all the work done last year, and I pray that God will be with us
as we try to fulfill God's mission in this place in this next year. And this
work is not only for members of the Church Council, but for everyone in the
Parish.
To help us all engage in God's mission for His church, it is helpful to remember
the words found in the Gospel of Matthew; "You are the light of the world...let
your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give
glory to your Father in heaven". How reassuring. Christ's light dwells deep
within us, and it is that light which allows us to fulfill the mission of the
church.
May God bless you as you do God's work.
